Engineers Without Borders Australia and the Australian Volunteers Program have formed an exciting new partnership to recruit and support EWB Field Professional placements. This partnership enables us to extend our networks, the reach of our program and most importantly, will increase the positive impact that people-centred engineering and appropriate solutions can have in communities. 

Check out upcoming assignments in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu deploying from November 2019.

Please note that all program volunteers will receive financial support to cover living expenses while on assignment. See position descriptions for more details.

We are also seeking Expressions of Interest for future overseas opportunities so please register your interest to prequalify you to be considered for the roles and/or participate in EWB training.

CAMBODIA ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: WASH Product & Supply Chain Engineer
Partner Organisation(s): WaterShed
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia (occasional travel required)
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: mid November 2019

The Role:  WaterSHED Ventures is a social enterprise that focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene. WaterSHED Ventures designs innovative, attractive products and brings them to market at an affordable price.  This assignment will continue the progress achieved by WaterSHED Ventures  by supporting the design iteration and production of the Paradise Shelter, which was initially launched in 2017. This role will focus on applying a human-centred design iteration process, developing a strategy for WaterSHED Ventures’ involvement in the supply chain, and strengthening the capacity of staff involved in the design, manufacturing, transport and construction of the Paradise Shelter.

About You: You have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Process Engineering or Product Design with the ability to design, prototype and pilot new products with community. You are also passionate about people-centred engineering and mentoring others.

Assignment Title: WASH Program Mentor
Partner Organisation: Engineers Without Borders Australia in Cambodia
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: mid November 2019

The Role: EWB’s WASH Program in Cambodia works with the local government and WASH sector in Cambodia to  address  challenges faced by communities living in hard to reach or challenging environments and their ability to access safe, hygienic and appropriate technological water and sanitation solutions. This role will support the EWB team to improve quality  and  sustainability  of  WASH  programs,  services,  systems  and  facilities  provided  by  local organisations through capacity strengthening, appropriate technology development, monitoring and evalution. 

About You: You will have a relevant background in engineering with strong project management, faciliation, stakeholder engagement and mentoring skills. Knowledge of WASH principles and human-centred design is a plus!

Assignment Title: WASH Capacity Development Mentor
Partner Organisation: Ministry of Rural Development (MRD)
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: mid November 2019

The Role: Support relevant stakeholders of the Ministry of Rural Development and its provincial departments and working groups to improve the quality and sustainability of WASH projects, services, facilities and systems in Cambodia as part of the implementation of the second phase of the National Action Plan (NAPII) to achieve universal WASH access by 2025. This role will focus on sanitation in challenging environments elements of the NAP through professional and technical capacity strengthening. 

About You: You have experience in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and/or international development with excellent stakeholder engagement and problem solving skills. Project management experience is a must as is a commitment to coaching and mentoring others!

Assignment Title: WASH Capacity Development Mentor
Partner Organisation: Cambodian Rural Development Team (CRDT)
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia with field work travel required
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: mid Nov 2019 or Feb 2020

The Role: CRDT is a local NGO focusing on environmentally appropriate agricultural development, rural water supply, sanitation and hygiene, and supporting market linkages and income generation. This role will support CRDT's technical staff to improve access to clean water and sanitation services/facilities in rural communities in Kratie province with a focus on technical skills for well-functioning water supply systems, and professional and organisational development. 

About You: You have relevant Engineering qualifications and experience in operating, maintaining, designing or planning water supply systems. You have strong project management and planning skills, and are passionate about mentoring others and sharing knowledge.

Assignment Title: Product Development Engineer (Assistive Technologies)
Partner Organisation: Light For The World (LFTW)
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia 
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: mid Nov 2019 

The Role: This assignment will support the existing AgriLab project in Cambodia, a partnership between EWB and Light For The World, focused on co-designing simple technologies that enable people with disability to access agricultural livelihoods. In 2019, the focus of the AgriLab is to collaborate with people in rural Pursat Province, Cambodia across an 8-month period, to build their creative capacity and design new mechanical technology. Alongside supportingthe AgriLab, this assignment will support engineering, usability, safety and manufacturing design work for several other disability inclusive technologies. 

About You: You have relevant Engineering qualifications and experience in product development and strong research and project management skills. A passion for mentoring others and people-centred design is also required.

TIMOR-LESTE ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: Inclusive WASH Program Innovation & Technical Mentor
Partner Organisation(s): Fundasaun Hafoun Timor Lorosa’e (FHTL) and EWB
Location: Dili, Timor-Leste (regular travel required)
Duration: 12 months
Commencement: Oct/Nov 2019 

The Role: Support EWB and FHTL to work with the WASH sector in Timor-Leste to improve inclusiveness of WASH solutions, knowledge & learning products and technical and M&E tools and systems. This role will focus on capacity strenghtening of local program staff and on the development of inclusive WASH solution design.

About You: You will have a Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental or Structural Engineering or a related qualification with experience in water and wastewater design, construction, management. Also, an understanding of inclusive approaches in WASH and strong project management and planning skills with a passion about mentoring others and sharing knowledge.

VANUATU ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: Solar-powered Water Systems Mentor
Partner Organisation: Adventist Development & Relief Agency (ADRA)
Location: Port Vila & Luganville, Vanuatu
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: 20th Oct 2019

The Role: This assignment will work with ADRA, EWB and relevant sector players to improve the supply chain and reliability of solar-powered pumps in water supply systems in rural areas in Vanuatu. It establishes a new partnership between ADRA and Engineers Without Borders, with the placement of a skilled volunteer to mentor and strength capacity of ADRA’s local staff to achieve longer-term benefits of their WASH program, especially involving solar-powered water pump systems. This placement will also work with the broader sector to develop national solar water systems guidelines and standards.

About You: You have a background in mechanical, electrical or energy engineering or similar with experience in the design or operational aspects of solar-powered pump systems. Strong stakeholder enagement skills are required as is experience iin mentoring and coaching otehrs.

Assignment Title: Inclusive WASH Mentor (Menstrual Hygiene Management)
Partner Organisation: The Environmental Health (EH) Unit – The Department of Health, Vanuatu
Location: Port Vila, Vanuatu
Duration: 12 months with option to extend
Commencement: Feb 2020 (tbc)
*Please note that this position is subject to final funding approval

The Role: This assignment will work with EWB and the Environmental Unit of the Department of Health to mentor and strengthen the capacity of local staff to support the implementation and roll out of two key Policy and Guidelines documents 1) Menstrual and Hygiene Management  (MHM) provisions in the National Sanitation and Hygiene Policy and 2) MHM  guidelines and standards. This role will contribute to increasing access to WASH services for rural communities in Vanuatu by promoting and enabling inclusive WASH practices. 

About You: You have practical experience in managing gender and water and sanitation projects and in policy development with strong stakeholder engagement and program maangement skills.

Interested in volunteering with EWB and our partners overseas? 
EWB is forming new partnerships and planning new projects so we will have new overseas opportunities starting next year. Register your interest now to pre-qualify to be considered for future roles and/or participate in EWB training. Our next round of Sustainable Community Development training will be held in early October.
