Engineers Without Borders Australia and the Australian Volunteers Program have formed an exciting new partnership to recruit and support EWB Field Professional placements. This partnership enables us to extend our networks, the reach of our program and most importantly, will increase the positive impact that people-centred engineering and appropriate solutions can have in communities. 

Check out upcoming assignments in Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu deploying around end July or early August 2019. Please note that all program volunteers will receive financial support to cover living expenses while on assignement. See position descriptions for more details.

We are also seeking Expressions of Interest for positions starting later in the year (Sep-Oct)! Register your interest to prequalify you to be considered for the roles and/or participate in EWB training.

CAMBODIA ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: WASH Supply Chain Engineer
Partner Organisation(s): WaterShed
Location: Phnom Penh, Cambodia (occasional travel required)
Duration: 18 months (or 12 months)
Commencement: late July to early August 2019 (tbc)

The Role: 

WaterSHED Ventures is a social enterprise that focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene. WaterSHED Ventures designs innovative, attractive products and brings them to market at an affordable price.  This assignment will continue the progress achieved by WaterSHED Ventures  by supporting the design iteration and production of the Paradise Shelter, which was initially launched in 2017. This role will focus on applying a human-centred design iteration process, developing a strategy for WaterSHED Ventures’ involvement in the supply chain, and strengthening the capacity of staff involved in the design, manufacturing, transport and construction of the Paradise Shelter.

About You: You have a background in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Process Engineering or Product Design with the ability to design, prototype and pilot new products with community. You are also passionate about people-centred engineering and mentoring others.

TIMOR-LESTE ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: WASH Program Quality Mentor
Partner Organisation: WaterAid Timor-Leste
Location: Dili, Timor-Leste (regular travel required)
Duration: 12 months
Commencement: July 2019 

The Role:

WaterAid is an international NGO dedicated to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world’s poorest communities. Since 2005 WaterAid in Timor-Leste has been implementing rural community WASH programs in Liquiça and Manufahi Districts in partnership with 4 local NGOs. WaterAid works closely with the local and national government agencies to assist them with the ongoing provision of WASH services to communities. The WASH Program Mentor will contribute to enhancing the quality of WaterAid Timor-Leste’s program and to strengthen EWB WASH broader interventionsin Timor-Leste.

About You: You will have a Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental or Structural Engineering or a related qualification with experience in water and wastewater design, construction, management. You have strong project management and planning skills, and are passionate about mentoring others and sharing knowledge.

Assignment Title: WASH Field Support Mentor
Partner Organisation: PLAN Timor-Leste
Location: Dili, Timor-Leste (regular travel required)
Duration: 12 months
Commencement: July 2019

The Role:

Plan International works with communities to improve access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation and to raise awareness of the importance of hand washing and waste management. By working side by side with communities to build sustainable, community-managed water and sanitation services, Plan International engages Timorese communities to incorporate good hygiene practices, including hand washing, sanitary toilet use and environmental cleanliness into their everyday lives. Improved sanitation facilities are one of the key methods for reducing stunting and improving the health of children and their families. This role will work with the staff of Plan Timor-Leste and local partner organisations to help increase access to sustainable WASH services and facilaities, and also contrbute to strengthening EWB Australia's WASH program in Timor-Leste. 

About You: You will have a Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental or Structural Engineering or a related qualification with experience in water and wastewater design, construction, management, including skills in using software for data analysis and design. You have strong project management and planning skills, and are passionate about mentoring others and sharing knowledge.

VANUATU ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment Title: WASH Mentor (Peri-Urban Communities & Schools Program)
Partner Organisation: Live and Learn Environmental Education – Vanuatu (LLEV)
Location: Port Vila, Vanuatu
Duration: 12 months
Commencement: end July or early August 2019 

The Role:

Since 2015, EWB has been working with LLEV on the early stages of the Western Pacific Sanitation Marketing and Innovation Program (WPSMIP). This program aimed to improve sanitation and hygiene access and behaviours by improving supply chains and demand for sanitation and hygiene and creating supportive environments in communities that enable behaviour change to occur. Through its WASH program, LLEV currently works in 3 peri-urban communities in Shefa province and one in in Sanma province.

This role will be involved in two on-going projects that are directly related to LLEV long term goals of safeguarding safe drinking water, improving hygiene and access basic sanitation for communities. The WASH Mentor will be working with a Ni-Vanuatu counterpart, working as the Technical Officer and will also be supporting the LLEV WASH Project Manager in the implementations of the WASH Program.  

About You: You will have extensive practical experience experience working directly with water, sanitation and/or wastewater systems, including understanding of materials, costings, labour, procurement, small business practices etc. for constructing and piloting various technologies.

Assignment Title: Environmental Health & Sanitation Mentor
Partner Organisation: Environmental Health Unit, Ministry of Health
Location: Port Vila, Vanuatu
Duration: 12 months
Commencement: end July or early August 2019

The Role:

The Environmental Health (EH) Unit in Port Vila is a small unit responsible for implementing the Environmental Health program, largely defined in the Public Health Act – Amendment (2018). The unit recently coordinated the development of the Sanitation and Hygiene Policy (2018) and are currently leading the development of the Sanitation Guidelines and Standards, assisted by the current EWB Program Manager. In addition, to implementing Sanitation and Hygiene initiatives, the unit is responsible for implementing food safety and tobacco control programs. This role will mentor and strengthen the capacity of local staff in this specialist area to support the implementation and roll out of two key Policy and Guidelines documents, namely:
a) the Sanitation and Hygiene Policy and, 
b) the Sanitation guidelines and standards

About You: You will have relevant qualifications and experience in WASH and/or environmental management with excellent stakeholder management skills and experience in program design and management.

Future Assignments - Seeking EOIs

Interested in volunteering with EWB and our partners overseas? 
EWB is forming new partnerships and planning new projects so we have new overseas opportunities starting later in the year that we're in the process of finalisation. Register your interest now to pre-qualify you to be considered for the roles below and/or participate in EWB training.  EWB will be running our next round of Sustainable Community Development training on 8-10 July. 

Opportunities Available

1. Solar-Powered Systems Mentor - Port Vila, VANUATU (12+ months)
We're seeking candidates with a background in mechanical or energy engineering with experience in designing solar-powered pump systems. This role will support our partner organisation to increase access to clean water for rural communities and improve the sustainability of their WASH programs and solar-powered pump systems. 

2. EWB Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program Mentor – CAMBODIA (12+ months)
Support the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of EWB’s WASH  projects in partnership with local organisations. The WASH projects contribute to improve access to WASH facilities and services at community level. They also contribute to strengthen the technical capacity in WASH of local organisations. Experience in WASH related engineering, human-centred design approach and project cycle management is required.

3. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program Mentor – CAMBODIA (12+ months)
Support the capacity building of technical staff of EWB Cambodia’s partners, in design, construction, operation and maintenance of WASH infrastructure. The mentor will also provide support in establishing monitoring and evaluation plans for the partner organisations. Experience in engineering, human-centred design approach and international development best practices is required.

4. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program Mentor – TIMOR LESTE (12+ months)
Support the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of EWB’s WASH  projects in partnership with local organisations. The WASH projects contribute to improve access to WASH facilities and services at community level. They also contribute to strengthen the technical capacity in WASH of local organisations. Experience in WASH related engineering, human-centred design approach and project cycle management is required.

5. Mechanical, Electrical or Product Development Mentor - CAMBODIA (12+ months)
Support the design and testing of new humanitarian appropriate technologies in Cambodia. These technologies aim to address community needs, in the areas of WASH, built environment, energy or disability inclusion, through scalable, market-based solutions.  Experience with human-centred design principles and workshop faciliation will be required

6. Accessible Product Development Mentor - CAMBODIA (12+ months)
We're seeking interest from Mechanical or Product Development Engineers or Product Designers or Occupational Therapists to work with EWB and our partner(s) in Cambodia to help refine, test and implement of one or more mechanical technologies aimed at improving people with disabilities' access to agricultural livelihoods.

7. Gender & Strategy Mentor - TIMOR-LESTE (6-9 months)
Women in Engineering, or Feto Enginera (FE), is established to empower and support women in engineering to create a better future for the development of Timor-Leste.  The team is seeking a mentor to work with the Feto Enginera Group and EWB in Timor-Leste to develop and implement the group's strategy in line with their vision and mission. This role will contribute to improving diversity and equity in STEM education and industry.

8. Training or Education Specialist - TIMOR-LESTE (6-12 months)
Support EWB's Engineering Education and Skills Development Program to improve training and practical learning opporunities aimed at 
strengthening professional and leadership skills of Timorese students and professionals in engineering and STEM professions to enable more effective application of technical skills.
