Are you interested in learning more about Australia’s traditional history and cultures? Do you work with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities and want a deeper understanding on how to engage in appropriate ways on Country? Do you want to work with EWB in its Engineering on Country projects?

This year the NSW EWB region is holding a cross cultural awareness training day to provide our members and volunteers with the skills to engage and interact appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We are encouraging anyone who wants to volunteer with EWB in our Engineering on Country program to undertake this training to become culturally competent.

This session will be run by a professional, highly regarded Indigenous facilitator, Tom Kirk. Tom has been providing Cultural Awareness Training for EWB NSW for the past three years and is a highly skilled Indigenous consultant who has been developing and delivering Indigenous Cultural Awareness Programs for over 18 years.

Tom will take us through:

  • Indigenous history, cultures and peoples
  • Non-Indigenous & Indigenous attitudes towards each other and how they are formed
  • Culturally sensitive behaviour and actions

The program will help participants develop a sense of the complexity of Aboriginal cultures and related current issues. We will recognise that different cultures have different ways of valuing, seeing, doing and believing. However, often our similarities are just as important as our differences, and it is vital to be able to bridge the cultural gap.

At this Cultural Awareness Training Course, the participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of Indigenous culture, society & history
  • Understand non-Indigenous & Indigenous attitudes towards each other
  • Promote self-reflection and consideration of diverse backgrounds
  • Enhance cross-cultural working abilities
  • Understand how to navigate cross cultural situations and projects
  • Develop tools for contributing positively to crossing cultural projects and environments

Student members of EWB: $20*
Professional members of EWB: $80*
General public: $150

* You may apply for a scholarship to be reimbursed the cost of this cultural awareness training. Details to come.
