Applications close 6th September 2010
Description
The Sri Lankan School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (SLSPO) provides prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) education to Sri Lankan graduate students aged 18 – 25.
The SLSPO trains men and women to support and rehabilitate people with physical disabilities. This includes learning to manufacture and fit prosthetic limbs (prostheses) and orthopaedic braces (orthoses) that suit their client’s lives and environment.
SLSPO is a part of the Cambodian trust, which has P&O schools across South/Eastern Asia. EWB have been partnered with the Cambodia Trust for over 4 years, assisting with curriculum development and delivery to realise many people’s ambitions to become prosthetist - orthotists.
SLSPO draws on engineering related disciplines such as simple mechanics, materials science and mathematics and combines this knowledge with input from prosthetics and orthotics professionals, technicians and physiotherapists to provide quality courses and clinical facilities for the disabled.
The successful Curriculum Development Facilitator will be following on from EWB’s first placement to Sri Lanka who has adapted existing curriculum from Cambodia in collaboration with SLSPO staff. In 2010 they delivered the first in-house version of the course, a great milestone for the school.
Working with academic and practical staff at SLSPO, the volunteer facilitator will assist in developing teaching material, experimental exercises and field visits. To build the teaching capacity of the SLSPO local counterparts, the successful candidate will assist and mentor SLSPO staff to deliver these modules to students, design evaluation and identify future opportunities to enhance the course. All classes are delivered in English.
This placement will collaborate with the IT Knowledge Management position that is also being advertised at SLSPO. Like all EWB volunteers the successful candidate will not only be an ambassador for EWB, but will also be responsible of managing the relationship with SLPSO and potentially other organisations in Sri Lanka. This gives the volunteer a superb opportunity to participate in expanding EWB’s collaboration with SLSPO, and the region in general.
