Partner Description


Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) has a vision for improved quality of life for all Nepali people by improving water, sanitation and hygeine (WASH) services. NEWAH’s objectives are to bring substantial positive changes in the lives of the Nepali poor, marginalized, remote, conflict affected or in crisis by:

  • Providing technical and financial support in water, health and sanitation services directly or through other non profit making agencies

  • Developing the capacity of the individual and institutions in the sector to manage water, health and sanitation programmes

  • Engaging in research to enhance the sectoral knowledge base for policy reform

  • Collaborating with other agencies to leverage equitable and sustainable access to safe water, health and sanitation services.

  • Supporting the states policies and other stakeholders programs to increase equitable and sustainable access to WASH services.



This position will be co-managed by NEWAH and WaterAid Nepal (one of NEWAHs funding partners).

NEWAH  

Project Background


NEWAH’s regional office in Chitwan require a volunteer to assist with their programs in rural Nepal. NEWAH with WaterAid Nepal have been developing a Water Safety Plan (WSP) approach in the Terrai region of Nepal. The successful candidate will assist NEWAH with WSP pilot projects with the aim to expand this to a larger area.  The volunteer will primarily work on capacity building around the WSP approach as well as assisting with reporting. The volunteer will:

  • Provide support to NEWAH Headquarters and regional offices to document, monitor and evaluate AusAid funded programmes

  • Provide professional support to NEWAH staff on project proposal preparation

  • Report monthly to WaterAid and meet quartlerly to discuss progress and direction

  • Improve NEWAH and WaterAid Nepal’s approach to addressing issues of water quality through the pilot WSP project approach in one region of the Terai.

  • Support the locally based field team monitor its impact and sustainability.

  • Develop technical solution to address water quality in the local context, such as addressing pit latrine designs to reduce ground water contamination and looking at the effectiveness of household water treatment systems.

  • Build capacity of NEWAH’s technical team in the monitoring of ongoing and completed pilot project in the area of water quality; and in locally appropriate water quality mitigation techniques.


 

Timing


 The role consists of three important phases beginning June 2010, including a 10-12-month field secondment in Nepal commencing in August 2010. 

Phase 1: Pre-departure –  June 2010

  • Pre-departure preparation (medical clearances, training, administrative)

  • Linking with the Australian based EWB project team if required for the project

  • Linking with a local EWB chapter to enhance your resources and support networks and create opportunities for sharing your experience with members



Phase 2: Field operations – August 2010

  • Departure to host country and partner organisations

  • Undertaking specific role within partner organisation

  • Linking with EWB Field Officers to develop appropriate ‘Learning & Change’ materials to share with EWB members and partner organisations



Phase 3: Post field alumni – 2011

  • Return to Australia to collaborate with the project team, knowledge hub (if relevant( and with an EWB chapter for a minimum period of 12 months

  • Participate in various EWB events including the National Conference and intake presentation evenings

  • Participate in the development and dissemination of ‘Learning & Change’ materials within the EWB community

  • Mentor future field volunteers preparing to work with the partner organisation

Criteria


Essential



  • Relevant tertiary qualification and experience in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector

  • Experience working in the field

  • Experience working with communities

  • Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and flexible




Desirable



  • Experience working overseas or in remote areas

  • Experience working in a team

  • Cultural sensitivity

  • Experience in reporting and promotion of WASH


 

Additional Secondment Information


Allowances:

  • Volunteers will receive an allowance for living and basic accommodation.

  • Volunteers will be provided with airfares at the commencement and completion of the placement, plus basic travel insurance and emergency evacuation insurance.



Confirmation of secondment is subject to:

  • Formal approval from EWB and the partner organisation.

  • Procurement of visa and work permits.

  • Satisfactory completion of a first aid certificate.

  • Satisfactory participation in a pre-departure briefing run by EWB (in July 2010)

  • A satisfactory medical examination of the applicant.

  • A satisfactory criminal record check of the applicant and accompanying adults by the Australian Police.
