Partner Description
All their work is planned designed, implemented and monitored jointly with communities in their villages, their language and their context. Special focus is given on the poor, marginalised and disadvantaged people and community groups in remote, difficult to reach mountain communities.
RIDS-Nepal core work, the “Family of 4” holistic community development concept, involves the installation of pit-latrines, smokeless stoves, solar home systems and improved village drinking water system to improve the health of communities. Once these projects are implemented elements of the “Family of 4 PLUS”, consisting of solar passive green houses, non-formal education programs, solar food driers, indoor slow sand water filters, nutrition program for malnourished children and heated bathing centres, are added to compliment these basics.
Project Background
While the RIDS-Nepal team has developed strong capabilities in aspects of their work, skills gaps have been identified in the management of their water projects. Continuing our close working relationship, in 2010 EWB will begin assisting RIDS-Nepal remote project staff to design and implement improved appropriate village drinking water system in existing partner villages. RIDS-Nepal require a Water Supply Engineer mainly based in Dharapori area to:- Follow-up and check both of RIDS-Nepal’s previously designed and built village drinking water supplies (DWS) in the villages of Dhadhaphaya and Tulin.
- Propose any needed amendments, repairs, improvements for two existing village DWS
- A feasibility study for the design and budgeting of new potential village DWS.
- To participate in the design and build of up to three additional village DWS for the local village context in Humla, funding permitting.
- To develop and teach the local RIDS-Nepal staff, a village DWS maintenance program.
- To oversee the training of the DWS maintenance program to the local end users by the local RIDS-Nepal staff.
- To develop and deliver a monitoring and maintenance task list for periodical maintenance of each village DWS.
- To teach the periodical maintenance task list to the local RIDS-Nepal staff
- To provide some workshop/classes for Kathmandu University and other professional groups in the field of village DWS maintenance
Timing
The role consists of three important phases beginning June 2010, including a 10-month field secondment in Nepal commencing in August 2010.Phase 1: Pre-departure – June 2010
- Pre-departure preparation (medical clearances, training, administrative)
- Linking with the Australian based EWB project team if required for the project
- Linking with a local EWB chapter to enhance your resources and support networks and create opportunities for sharing your experience with members
Phase 2: Field operations – August 2010
- Departure to host country and partner organisations
- Undertaking specific role within partner organisation
- Linking with EWB Field Officers to develop appropriate ‘Learning & Change’ materials to share with EWB members and partner organisations
Phase 3: Post field alumni – 2011
- Return to Australia to collaborate with the project team, knowledg e hub (if relevant( an d with an EWB chapter for a minimum period of 12 months
- Participate in various EWB events including the National Conference and intake pres entation evenings
- Participate in the development and dissemination of ‘Learning & Change’ materials within the EWB community
- Mentor future field volunteers preparing to work with the partner organisation

Selection Criteria
Essential
- Relevant tertiary degree or experience
- 4 years plus experience in design, construction and maintenance of DWS systems.
- Experience in water quality monitoring
- Demonstrated report writing skills for the development of user/maintenance manuals
- Physically fit
Desirable
- Experience in a teaching or instructional role
- Experience in a cross cultural environment
- Experience working in remote or isolated areas
- Basic Nepali language
Additional Secondment Information
Allowances
- Volunteers will receive an allowance for living and basic accommodation.
- Volunteers will be provided with airfares at the commencement and completion of the placement, plus basic travel insurance and emergency evacuation insurance.
Confirmation of secondment is subject to:
- Formal approval from EWB and the partner organisation.
- Procurement of visa and work permits.
- Satisfactory completion of a first aid certificate.
- Satisfactory participation in a pre-departure briefing run by EWB (in July 2009)
- A satisfactory medical examination for the applicant.
- A satisfactory criminal record check by the Australian Police for the applicant and all accompanying adults.
