The EWB Energy Knowledge Hub is developing an Energy Efficiency Guide to help EWB field volunteers be even more effective in their work assisting communities to meet their energy needs sustainably.

We are looking to establish a working group of people who can meet face-to-face in Melbourne for 2-3 hours per month to work together on developing the guide (these will be working bees, not committee-style meetings). We aim to have the first version of the guide completed and ready for EWB field volunteers to use in the field by the end of 2010.

The guide will be a document with accompanying tools that covers all aspects of energy efficiency in the context of a developing community, including:

  • Sources of energy, and typical efficiency of appliances/machines/processes that use energy sources in different ways
  • Technical information, figures, and tools
  • Cross-cultural and site-specific considerations (e.g. different understandings of and attitudes toward energy needs, technologies and uses affecting energy efficiency)
  • Valuing and utilising local knowledge and skills
  • How participation and/or capacity building of the community partner organisation and/or community members can be facilitated (e.g. how members can help improve efficiency in their own environments/groups)

The working group will communicate with relevant EWB stakeholders (Energy Knowledge Hub Committee, staff, past energy project field volunteers and community partner organisations) to ensure the guide is relevant and useful.

The guide should also include a strategy for monitoring and evaluating its effectiveness, ongoing improvement, and sharing lessons with relevant stakeholders (e.g. Energy Knowledge Hub committee and membership, EWB community partner organisations, other engineering/development organisations).

The longer-term vision is for the guide to evolve into a complete energy efficiency training module to be incorporated into field volunteers’ pre-departure training and EWB Chapter events (e.g. Pathways to Working with Developing Communities).

If you would like to be part of the working group please send a succinct email to Melanie Bok (alisonmelanie at hotmail dot com) outlining why you would like to take part, your relevant experience, and confirming your commitment to the timing outlined above. Note that, as a volunteer organisation, we value your contribution and recognise that other commitments (e.g. exams, work commitments) will prevent you from attending meetings from time to time.

 Kind regards,

 Melanie Bok
