Applications close 6th September 2010

Partner Description:

 Live & Learn Environmental Education is a non-profit, non-government organisation which promotes greater understanding and action toward human and environmental sustainability through education and dialogue building.

Live & Learn works with communities through critical entry points, such as safe drinking water issues, to address community health concerns but also to facilitate community ownership of problems and the action necessary to address and sustain a better quality of life for all community members.

EWB has worked with Live & Learn in Cambodia for a number of years, but this is a new partnership with Live & Learn Indonesia, based on the beautiful island of Lombok.

Project Background:

Live & Learn Indonesia has recently started a new project: Testing and modeling sanitation marketing in rural communities in Lombok. The goal is to improve access to affordable sanitation through sanitation marketing and supply chain development.

Traditional village

Almost fifty per cent of the developing world’s population – 2.5 billion people – lacks safe sanitation facilities. Inadequate access to safe sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of people every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more. In the Asia/Pacific region, 80,000 children under five years of age die each year from diarrheal diseases (This translates into one child every seven minutes). Many developing countries are set to meet their Millennium Development Goals on provision of safe drinking water target but at a global level we will miss the sanitation target by more than half a billon people.

Rubbish pile in Batu Nampur

The majority of people in Lombok live in rural areas and many outside the reach of basic services. Open defecation is common and this is leading to wide spread disease and illness. Only 15% of schools in rural Lombok have access to basic sanitation. The absence of such facilities is causing low school attendance of girls and leaves a significant gap in education equality. Against this background this project will model and test sanitation marketing and hygiene behavioural education in rural communities. In closing the sanitation gap the project will model and test approaches that can be extended through development organisations regionally and add value to existing project and programs on sanitation.

The project will challenge the commonly held assumption that building infrastructure alone will close the sanitation gap as it will challenge misunderstanding that sanitation options are expensive and can only be delivered by the government, an NGO or an aid agency. Sanitation will be treated like a consumer product but the supplier will be local cooperatives and groupings, who understand the cultural and social fabric and have the reach to service the consumer well. The models and approaches will be developed in close collaboration with Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and PHAST approaches.

Role Required:

A sanitation advisor is required to help Live & Learn Indonesia strengthen local capacity for sanitation marketing and sustainable Operations and Maintenance in Eastern and Southern Lombok. The volunteer would be based at Live & Learn’s office in Mataram in Lombok, with regular field travel.

Well in Gili Asahan

The Field Volunteer will be focused on assisting Live and Learn with:

  • Sanitation marketing and extension of O&M to rural areas;
  • Establishment of 4 village-based sanitation enterprises in rural areas;
  • Establishment of rainwater harvesting systems in rural schools;
  • Establishment of sanitation facilities in schools;
  • Hygiene and sanitation education.

The field volunteer will work alongside the Country Manager of Live and Learn Indonesia, Mrs Hani Nusantari, to achieve the above objectives.

Ideally this position would be a two-year placement, which would allow the volunteer to complete the above activities. However, Live and Learn will also consider applications from 12 month volunteers.

Timing:

The role consists of three important phases beginning in October 2010, including a 12-24 (negotiable) month field placement in Lombok, Indonesia commencing in January 2011.

Phase 1: Pre-departure – October 2010

  • Pre-departure preparation (medical clearances, training, administrative)
  • Linking with the Australian based EWB project team if required for the project
  • Linking with a local EWB chapter to enhance your resources and support networks and create opportunities for sharing your experience with members
  • Identifying additional resources and support for the project
  • Communicating with the Partner Organisation to discuss and clarify the project and role requirements

Phase 2: Field operations – January 2011

  • Departure to host country and partner organisations
  • Working alongside your counterpart within the partner organisation to meet your position objectives and build organisational and technical capacity
  • Linking with EWB Field Officers to develop appropriate ‘Learning & Change’ materials to share with EWB members and partner organisations

Phase 3: Post field alumni – 2012

  • Return to Australia to collaborate with the project team, knowledge hub (if relevant) and with an EWB chapter for a minimum period of 12 months  - this is on a casual volunteer basis – e.g. one evening a fortnight
  • Participate in various EWB events including the National Conference and intake presentation evenings
  • Participate in the development and dissemination of ‘Learning & Change’ materials within the EWB community
  • Mentor future field volunteers preparing to work with the partner organisation

To fulfill this role, the volunteer will receive an allowance for living and basic accommodation, airfares to your host country at the commencement and completion of the placement, travel and emergency evacuation insurance, technical and personal support from EWB staff and chapters.
