Position Available: Civil Engineering Curriculum Development Officer

Engineers Without Borders Australia is currently recruiting for a civil engineer with an interest and experience in education or training to join the team at Dili Institute of Technology (DIT).

      §     Location: East Timor (Dili)

      §     Duration: 12 months

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of DIT to deliver civil engineering courses at an appropriate standard for graduates to meaningfully contribute to the sustainable development of Timor Leste. The EWB volunteer will work within the Civil Engineering Department based in Dili, which comes under the Science and Engineering faculty. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Timor Leste developing its own engineering capability and providing a locally trained workforce for the country to lead its own future development.

DIT is striving to improve the quality of its staff, teaching resources, research, curricula and teaching and evaluation methods.  They have requested EWB’s assistance in the development of their engineering program, which will involve the development of curricula, syllabi, laboratories, practical components and teacher training. The main focus area is civil engineering, in particular: water; geotechnical; and structural engineering.

It is expected that the new volunteer will join the existing EWB volunteer, Brad, and build upon his work through undertaking the following activities:

- Within the team work schedule assist the DIT civil team to develop the syllabus in four main disciplines:

      - General knowledge and science;

      - Structural engineering;

      - Water engineering; and

      - Geotechnical engineering (including road engineering).

-Continue to develop a network between DIT staff and students and the local industry, including identifying opportunities for collaboration, internships or similar.

- Prepare and lead a training schedule for the civil staff to lead the project, including:

      - Prepare material to teach the teachers engineering principles in the technical areas covered;

      - Lead working sessions with the teachers to teach them engineering principles and build teaching material (lesson plans and resources);

      - Document material used to train the teachers for future use;

      - Work with the other EWB volunteer to optimise the development of the overall curriculum.

- Support the establishment of an on-site Knowledge Repository and Tutoring Program.

- Support the DIT management team to implement their strategic plan.

This role will be supported by academics at the University of Western Australia.

This role would be suited to both experienced civil engineers and civil engineering graduates with an interest in teaching and learning approaches and strong communication skills. Engineering academics are strongly encouraged to apply.

EWB pays a generous living allowance and covers flights, visas, insurance and pre-departure medical expenses.

My name is Robert Collins, I am a Boilermaker with 30 years Australia-wide experience. I am also an exTAFE Teacher. I have just found this opportunity at DIT and have noticed that the application date has just passed. Is it too late to apply for this position?
