EWB Curriculum Development Research Intern

Curriculum Development Research Intern - Canberra or Perth

Background:

The EWB Curriculum and Research (C&R) team are looking for a volunteer intern to undertake research on engineering and sustainable community develoment skills and education leading to the documentation of a set of Development Engineering Standards.  These will represent a set of competencies, skills and attributes a development engineer should meet to have an appropriate background to be involved with community-based development engineering.  These will be used to assist the design of EWB Learning and Change initiatives heading towards EWB’s 2015 aims.

Role Description:

The role will be undertaken by a volunteer intern with support from the EWB Curriculum and Research (C&R) team.

 Specific duties include:

  • develop an understanding of EWB and the C&R program, including aims, objectives, stakeholders and initiatives
  • develop an understanding of the terminology and objectives of university engineering education
  • undertake research to identify graduate attributes and competencies related to engineering, sustainable and community development, and appropriate technology (an initial set of references will be provided)
  • engage in ongoing discussions with the EWB Curriculum Development knowledge hub team
  • identify common skills and attributes from research, key EWB stakeholders and documents
  • develop an appropriate framework to articulate and describe the identified standards
  • document a set of standards based on research and stakeholder input
  • map the learning outcomes of existing EWB initiatives and engagements, across all areas (Learning and Change, Chapters and Working with Communities) to the developed standards, to identify overlap or gaps
  • other related tasks or duties as identified by the EWB C&R team

Reporting / Location:

The role will be within the EWB C&R team and report to either the EWB Challenge Coordinator (Dan Loden) or the EWB Undergraduate Research Coordinator (Jeremy Smith) depending on location.  The position can be based in Perth or Canberra, other locations will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Timing / Commitments:

The position will commence in March 2009 and run through until July 2009, or early if completed.  It requires a commitment of one-day a week or equivalent (around 4 weeks commitment in total).

  • Ability to work indepenantly and engage with the EWB C&R Team and Curriculum and Research Knowledge Hub
  • Willingness to learn and participate
