Partner Description

The Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (CSPO) works in the rehabilitation sector of Cambodia to train men and women from SE Asia in prosthetics and orthotics.  Their partners include ICRC, Handicap International, and Veterans International, all of which run rehabilitation centres in Cambodia.  All rehabilitation centres in Cambodia are staffed by CSPO graduates.  CSPO currently trains students from eleven nations and have thirty six students in their program.

Position Background

Kim Song, Cambodian Prosthetist - Orthotist lecturing in a theoritical classCSPO have requested one EWB volunteer to complete the localisation process of their first year mathematics and mechanics courses.  Those courses have been taught by EWB volunteers in the past and those volunteers have been training a local external lecturer to take over the classes.

The 2009 EWB-CSPO volunteers simplified the courses to comply with the School’s time limitations and to the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics syllabus guidelines.   The 2010 EWB volunteer would assist a Cambodian lecturer to fine-tune and deliver the courses to first year students. Classes run from October to December, 42 hours per course.

This role will be supported by the full-time lecturer of the same course, and management at CSPO. This role would be suited to both experienced engineers and engineering graduates with an interest for teaching and learning approaches and strong communication skills.

Key Activities

  • The volunteer would act as an assistant lecturer to the Cambodian lecturer.
  • The volunteer would provide extra tutorial time for the students if needed.
  • The volunteer would assist the Cambodian lecturer in using a teaching assistant.
  • The volunteers would give feedback to the Cambodian lecturer on his/her teaching skills.
  • If there is time and if possible, the volunteer would help CSPO Administration in the creation of an Excel database, and teach an introductory computer course to the first year students.
 

Timing

The role consists of three important phases beginning June 2010, including a 3-month field secondment commencing in October 2010.

Phase 1: Pre-departure – June 2010

  • Pre-departure preparation (medical, training, administrative)
  • Linking with EWB project team (Australia-based) if required for the project
  • Linking with a local EWB chapter (enhancing your resources and sharing experience with members)

Phase 2: Field operations – 2010 (start date to be confirmed, likely beginning of October)

  • Departure to host country and partner organisation
  • Orientation with support from existing EWB Field Officer and other established in-country field volunteers; introductions to CSPO staff
  • Support delivery and development of the course material and staff capacity

Phase 3: Post field alumni – 2011

  • Return to Australia to collaborate with the South East Asia management team and EWB chapter for a minimum period of 12 months
  • Participate in various EWB events including the National Conference
  • Participate in the development and dissemination of ‘Learning & Change’ materials within the EWB community
  • Mentor future field volunteers preparing to work with South East Asian partner organisations

Criteria

Essential

  • Desire to work closely with local staff and students
  • Ability to teach collaboratively
  • Sensitivity to other cultures (students are from many nationalities)
  • Sound mathematical knowledge
  • A positive, encouraging, enthusiastic, can-do attitude
  • Good problem solving techniques and initiative
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self motivated and well organised, able to work independently with remote supervision

Desirable

  • Experience in Cambodia
  • An adventurous attitude
  • Commitment to the goals and objectives of CSPO
  • Willingness to get involved in other projects should the opportunity arise
  • Ideally applicants will have experience in developing /delivering /assessing curricula, however this is not essential
  • A willingness to learn some Khmer language

  • Commitment to teamwork and capacity building techniques
  • Ability to cope with cultural and professional isolation and possibly basic living conditions

Additional Information

Volunteers will receive an allowance for living and basic accommodation. Volunteers will be provided with airfares at the commencement and completion of the placement, plus basic travel insurance and emergency evacuation insurance.

Confirmation of secondment is subject to:
  • Formal approval from EWB and the partner organisation.
  • Procurement of visa and work permits.
  • Satisfactory completion of a first aid certificate.
  • Satisfactory participation in a pre-departure briefing run by EWB in July 2010
  • A satisfactory medical examination for the applicant.
  • A satisfactory criminal record check by the Australian Police for the applicant and all accompanying adults.
