Water Supply and Sanitation
A rural community has their fresh water source three kilometers from the village. Each day and sometimes twice a day, mostly women and children walk to the water source to collect containers of water. The lack of available water in the community has also meant that there are no pour flush (water usage) toilets. In fact most people go to the toilet in the bushes around the village.
A local government agency and a donor organization have decided to help. They plan to build a pumping station at the water source and with the use of pipes, run water into four locations in the village where they will have tap stands. They will also build toilet blocks for every five families. Some of these will use water and some will be self-composting dry / ventilation toilets. When these constructions are completed, they plan to establish a water user group to maintain the equipment and to run a campaign to get everyone in the village to wash their hands regularly.
