The objective of OpenChar is:
To drive the development of appropriate, distributed Biochar technologies for agricultural communities through an open and collaborative process. Biochar is a technology with enormous potential to sequester carbon and enrich agricultural soils.
The OpenChar Initiative exists as an open-source website that allows interested individuals and organisations to contribute to the development of Biochar technology. This can be through submitting designs, modifying designs, solving problems, contributing case histories, providing practical guidance and operational knowledge.
This is the platform for initiating development of farm scale technologies for biochar production.
We hope that you can add to the development of biochar technologies through discussions and resources on this website.
What is Open-Source Collaboration?
Open-Source Collaboration is based on having an open public environment for sharing, adding and developing design ideas. Appropedia is an example of one such revolution.
The way OpenChar is setup for Open-Source Collaboration can be represented by the smiley face of Open source Collaboration.
By navigating through the applications side of this website you can choose the most appropriate technology for your application. From here you are linked to the technology side of the Website. This will have various summaries, design tools, and discussions on that technology. underlying key areas of research for that specific technology will also be identified.
Taking these designs you can then implement, test and report on these designs.
Two enable design progression all that OpenChar asks is that they feed any significant results back into OpenChar and any design improvements,, short falls and other things you discovered.
Feeding the properties of your feedstock and biochar back into the material properties section will also help others determine what is the best application for them.
