Project Background

In 2008, a team of EWB, CAT and KAC members worked together and successfully complete the Backyard Blitz I, which saw the construction of an amenities block and kitchen shelter.  The outcomes from this project go far beyond the built structure with the development of new relationships, skills and knowledge shared between all parties, and a strong shared pride in what was achieved.

The preliminary scope of works identified by CAT, KAC, EWB and the project team are as follows:

  1. Complete final outstanding items from Bentinck Blitz I including:
    1. Installing a solar hot water system on amenities block.
    2. Fabricating sinks and benches for kitchen shelter.
    3. Installing a water pump for amenity block showers.
    4. Repainting the amenities block and kitchen shelter.
    5. Installing new stair treads and handrails to amenities block.
    6. Completing the fitting of miscellaneous items to cubicles.
    7. Upgrading door latches to prevent rattling in windy conditions.
    8. Installing eaves, gutter and plumb rain water tank to amenities block.
    9. Assisting the island co-ordinator with replacement of parts for the island Ute.
    10. Inspecting the amenities block and kitchen shelter and make adjustments as necessary.
    11. Other minor maintenance items.

  2. Assisting members of the Kaiadilt community with their general tidy up of the Raft Point Community including removal of rubbish at the forefront of the area to the designated waste disposal area, especially any specific items that have risk of becoming airborne during cyclonic events.

  3. Replacement of Island Coordinator’s veranda that has been identified as a major safety hazard (Provisional):
    1. Scoping of works in Bentinck Island Blitz II – late May (organised by CAT).
    2. Removal and disposal of existing veranda.
    3. Installation of a proprietary veranda system from a certified manufacturer eg. Stramit Building Systems.
    4. Ensure adequate access and protection from elements.

  4. Installation of Amy's veranda and/or shade structure (Provisional):
    1. Scoping, Planning and Procurement by CAT and project team.
    2. Kaiadilt work gang to install with project team supervision during Bentinck Island Blitz III.

  5. Relationship Building including fishing, welding up and cooking on locally made barbeque plates, exploration of the island etc.

  6. Learning and change activities to capture the teams experience including:
    1. Documentary Video and/or Photo Library
    2. Interview's of the Community Members
    3. Writing Reports, Case Studies and/or Conference Papers
    4. Newsletter Articles
    5. Media Articles and/or Interviews
    6. Presentations to the Workplace/Boardrooms
    7. Presentations in Lectures and/or Tutorial Projects
