Housing

Context

Houses in Devikulam are mostly huts with cement or mud floors, walls made from mud or burnt brick, with roofs made of either thatched or palm leaf. There is also a group housing scheme in which houses were provided by the government to residents in the area. Such houses are made from burnt brick and concrete. The group houses built under this government scheme are in urgent need of maintenance.

Those in the community prefer staying in mud-thatch houses because it is cooler to live in. The concrete houses are so hot in the summer that they have to sleep outside at night-time. Those in the colony complained about the quality of their mud houses. They would like better houses, which offer more protection from the rain.
