About the Partner

Background

Habitat for Humanity Cambodia’s housing and community development programs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang and Kandal aim to reduce poverty by empowering communities to improve their access to affordable basic services and better living conditions.  To date, HFHC has served over 1,000 Cambodian families in need by providing land, secure titles, house construction, house repair/renovation, water and sanitation facilities including toilets, wells, open ponds, water filters, etc., and connection to infrastructure and services, as well as health, finance and livelihood training.

HFHC is closely involved in a major government initiative to improve land rights for squatter families through a World Bank supported project in Battambang- Cambodia’s second city.

In Phnom Penh, Habitat is working within resettlement sites around the city.  In Siem Reap, Habitat is working with the rural poor- many of whom are traditional farmers.  In Battambang, the target community is urban landless poor, and in Kandal, Habitat is working with families who have voluntarily relocated from the Steung Meanchey Municipal Dumpsite in Phnom Penh.

Habitat Cambodia works closely with the communities, local authorities, government officials and partners with local and international NGOs such as Maryknoll, Save the Children Australia, Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope, SEAD, Khemara, etc.  Habitat is also working with multilateral organizations such as the World Bank in Cambodia.

The communities in which Habitat works are poor families who do not have access to affordable housing solutions.  These communities are located in forced resettlement sites, dumpsites, and  urban, peri-urban and rural poor areas.

Current Project

HFH Cambodia is currently partnering with the World Bank to implement the Strengthening Civil Society-Government Partnership to Deliver Land Tenure Security (SCSGPDLTS) project. The initial concept for the SCSGPDLTS emerged from the Cambodian government's interest in testing different approaches for providing the poor with access to land and livelihood assistance between rural and urban areas. The government prepared a 'Civic Engagement Framework for Social Land Concessions (SLC) in urban areas'; which recognizes society must be mobilized to implement Social Land Concessions (SLC) in urban areas. As a result, the government has partnered with the World Bank to create programs, in addition to the Land Allocation for Social and Economic Development (LASED) program, which will work with communities that are currently working with NGOs. The EWB volunteer will assist the construction supervisor in the upgrading planning of the urban garden project in Battambang.
