The USYD chapter is looking for volunteers based in Sydney to assist with the High School Outreach Program. The program involves visiting high schools to deliver a presentation on water sanitation to junior high school students. This is followed by a hands on activity where students break up into groups to create a low-tech water filter. The session should take around one hour, but may alter depending on the needs of the school of interest.
The presentation and instructions for the activity will be available in the resources section.
If interested, please contact us! usyd@ewb.org.au
How A Visit Runs
Volunteers can either meet at the school or a pre-determined location if there is too much to carry.Usually a class goes for a double period (~ 1 hour). Half of this will be spent on the presentation, half will be on the hands on activity. Each class will have 2 volunteers, and the teacher will be supervising the class.
Presentation:
It is up to the volunteers to decide on how to divide up the presentation.
The are four main components: engineering and EWB, problems, solutions and activity.
The most logical way is for each volunteer to present two of these sections whilst the other "scribes".
Activity:
The class is divided into 6 groups, each representing a country, and have 30 minutes to build their water filter.
The voolunteers run the "shop", one may go around assisting students.
"Dirty water" can be obtained at the school.
At the end of the activity, keep all bottles. Used sand, gravel, cotton wool and cheesecloth can be thrown out.
Also, ask the teacher to fill out the evaluation form
