BACKGROUND

EWB also aims to educate Australian engineers and the wider community on issues of sustainable development, appropriate technology, poverty and the plight of disadvantaged people around the world.
In 2012, EWB will establish three new business units, replacing the current operational areas. The business units will be:

· EWB Institute (our education, leadership and innovation initiatives)
EWB DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS
EWB Development Partnerships will facilitate community development in Australia and overseas through partnerships in humanitarian engineering. It will bring about strategic change in the engineering and technical capacity of communities by enabling the exchange of knowledge and resources through a network of integrated partnerships across multiple sectors: community development, engineering, education and government. These partnerships will also enable Australian individuals and companies to contribute effectively to humanitarian work through volunteer opportunities and pro bono engineering.
EWB Development Partnerships incorporates a number of existing EWB programs:
· Overseas Program in South Asia and South East Asia
· Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Program
· Local Program (Australia-based)
These EWB programs are currently coordinated by four staff and rely on EWB members and corporate partners who volunteer their time and resources through placements, project teams and thematic communities of practices.
