EWB Challenge

The student design teams may address one, some or all of the suggested projects. Alternative ideas will also be considered. The teams should then provide the relevant design advice for the most appropriate engineering works associated with their selected design scope that will assist the sustainable development of rural Cambodians.

Each submission should fulfill the following requirements:

• Reporting Requirements

  Each participating team submission will consist of a design report written in English. The report should not exceed 20,000 words in length. Figures and drawings may be included but must be readable. Other supporting material may be included in the submission but are not essential. One hard copy and one electronic copy of the submission must be provided to the judging panel for evaluation.

  As a minimum, each team design report should:

  • Provide an overview (executive summary) of the recommended design.
  • Identify the alternative options considered during the design process and a justification for the selected technology, approach and/or process.
  • Details of the conceptual design, analysis and final design. Note that detailed engineering calculations are not required.
  • Identify schedules, detailed design, construction and maintenance costs associated with completion and construction of the design.
  • Identify how the selected design is appropriate to the social, environmental and economic context of RDIC and Kandal Province.
  • Discuss the long term sustainability and maintenance of the engineering work that would be completed as a consequence of the design
  • Provide basic advice on the construction and operation of the design including the role of RDIC (staff and volunteers) and the Kandal community and other relevant groups or organisations.
  • Contain a statement that provides full details of any external support provided to the design team and identifying any content that is not attributable to the design team.

• Executive Summary

  Each team entry must be accompanied by an executive summary. This executive summary must not exceed 4 pages and allows teams to provide a concise description of how their design addresses each of the selection criteria for the written submission. The summary must also provide a team reflection on their learning / experience gained through the EWB Challenge.

• Submission Coversheet

  Each team entry must be accompanied by a coversheet. Coversheets can be downloaded under resources section.

• General Notes

  The design should be consistent with the social, architectural, environmental and economic context of RDIC and Kandal Province.

  The design team should consider long term sustainability and maintenance - the village should be able to repair, rebuild and replicate each design.

  If more than one design issue is addressed (for example "Water Supply and Treatment" and "Waste Water Management"), an integrated approach should be adopted.

  Students will be provided with supporting information on RDIC, Kandal Province and other factors that influence the sustainable development of the area. Information can be downloaded under Resources. It is requested that students direct all queries to EWB via the EWB Challenge Online Forum.

  Students are strongly encouraged to seek external sources for additional information that they feel is relevant to their designs.

  It is anticipated that teams will be required to make a number of assumptions to progress with their designs. All assumptions must be clearly stated in the design report with appropriate, logical justifications.
