Judging Criteria

Written Submission

Projects will be judged based on the following criteria. All criteria bear equal weighting.

1. Solution to the design problem

Creativity and sound use of engineering principles used in producing a design that solves the problem both effectively and efficiently.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of basic science and engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation and solution.
  • Ability to utilise a systems approach to design and operational performance.
  • Ability to design practical and financially viable solutions.

2. Design process

Clear documentation of the design process including a description of the various design principles, criteria and methods used in formulating the solution. Team management and approach to the development of solutions should be addressed when describing methods.

Teams should demonstrate the ability to identify a range of appropriate technologies and/or design solutions with critical analysis regarding their suitability for RDIC and Kandal Province.

3. Sustainable Development and Ethical Responsibilities

Demonstrated understanding of the social, cultural, environmental and economic context in which the project is set. Clearly communicated appreciation of the principles of sustainable design and the professional and ethical responsibilities of engineers.

4. Quality of written report and project summary

Clearly and effectively describes the important aspects of the design including the problem solved, the method of solution and the contribution the project makes towards the sustainable development of RDIC and Kandal Province.

Team Presentation

Finalist teams will also be judged based on their presentation at the EWB Conference. The presentation would cover the above criteria and also meet the requirements of criterion 5.

5. Quality of oral presentation

Clearly and effectively communicates the important aspects of the design including the problem solved, the method of solution and the contribution the project makes towards the sustainable development of RDIC and Kandal Province. Emphasis will be placed on how the team articulates the merits of their design to their audience.
