Centre for Appropriate Technology - Call for Volunteers
Dear All,
I am circulating this on behalf of the the Centre for Appropriate
Technology (CAT), Cairns, as they are looking for volunteer engineers
and builders to work with them on a project in Cape York. Details of
the project and volunteers required are below. Could you please
forward this onto people you think might be interested? As this is a
CAT placement all inquiries should go through Yosi on 07 4031 0505.
Turtle Camp Project
Turtle Rescue Camp is situated in the Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council
boundary on the western side of Cape York Peninsula Queensland. It is
very remote small camp and the nearest town is Mapoon, some 90 kms by
dirt road.
The main purpose of this camp is to help indigenous residents and
researchers to protect the turtles and other marine life from ghost
nets and feral pigs. Every year during June to September (the nesting
season) many activities take place by locals and others.
The established camp grounds are in need of an urgent upgrade. The
camp grounds currently consist of 2 x pit toilets and number of
cleared sites without running water.
This project’s aim is to upgrade the camping facilities to support
visitor management in the environmentally significant turtle nesting
habitat. More specifically, we are aiming to build the followings:
Ablution block (2 x toilets; 2 x showers) with guttering and a small
rainwater tank
Installing two Gough-Hybrid toilet systems including trenches
Erecting a water tank stand to fit 10,000 liters tank
Installing small solar electric system
Installing solar hot water system
Some water reticulation work
*erecting a kit shed (this kit is already on site and it’s not part of
the main project. However, we’ll endeavor to erect it as well while we
are there).
The Centre for Appropriate Technology (CAT) Cairns office will act as
Project Manager for this project and will coordinate all construction
activities as well as all other related aspects such as coordination
of volunteer/s. The Camp has its own manager who will be working
closely with CAT and the Traditional Owners.
It is envisaged that the project will get on its way sometime in March
2010. Depending on rain and other accessibility conditions, we are
aiming to start the construction during June-July 2010. We are
estimating that the construction phase will take 3-5 weeks.
Accommodation for volunteers will be available on site, mainly in
safari tents. This depends on the number of researchers/workers at the
site. Food will also be available on site. The area is under the Qld
Alcohol management Act and it’s limited. Other costs such as
transportation to the site will be covered by CAT.
Currently we are looking for volunteers in the following areas:
Builder
Tradesman
Structural Engineer
The Builder and Tradesman will be required closer to the construction
starting date. However, we are looking for an Engineer who can come
and visit the site with us during the second half of this month
(February). We’ll need an assessment of the site as well as some
recommendations on erecting the kit shed.
For any further information and/or enquiries, please contact Yosi at
the CAT’s Cairns office (07 40310505).
