On Wednesday 31 March the AWA Vic Branch Young Water Professionals partnered with the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Indigenous Focus Group to run an Indigenous Cultural Heritage Tour in Melbourne.

Celebrating the cultural significance of the Yarra River (or Birrarung), the group enjoyed an entertaining and thought-provoking walking tour along the banks, hosted by the Koorie Heritage Trust. The tour certainly provided a different perspective on the city of Melbourne, and challenged delegates to imagine life within inner Melbourne in the days prior to the hustle and bustle, skyscapers and concrete associated with modern day life.

They continued the conversation over Indigenous-inspired canapés at Tjanabi, a restaurant at Federation Square owned and managed by Auntie Carolyn Briggs, senior elder of the Boon Wurrung people.

"Our guide really put into perspective the undeniable links between the local Indigenous people and this place" Caitlin – Participant

“We’ve had so much interest in the event that we’re planning to run it again later in the year. It’s great to see growing appreciation for Indigenous heritage and active participation in reconciliation.” Claire – EWB Indigenous Focus Group

Many thanks to the corporate supporters of the event, Melbourne Water, GHD and John Holland.

Proceeds from the event go towards the EWB Indigenous Australia program, which works with Indigenous Australians on education and sustainable engineering projects. EWB’s work is based on a two way sharing of knowledge and cultures to further its ultimate goal of a reconciled Australia.
