Construction completed at 10 Dezembru School
Dez Dezembru school is a school in Dili, East Timor, that previously had no operational toilets or sufficient water supply. EWB, worked with local water NGO, Hamoris Timor Oan, and Canberra Friends of Dili to supply the school with running water, pour flush toilets, and handwash stations. Students have just finished a hygiene education module, and the toilets are now in use!

EWB Volunteer Vaughn Grey updates on the construction progress:
A final update on the project at the 10 December school in Dili.
The photos were taken during the hygiene education day that HTO ran with the students and teachers showing them how to use the new equipment. Construction was completed 2 and a half weeks ago, and the facilities have been used since then. Today I visited the school to verify that construction was complete and am happy to verify that everything has been undertaken to the specification plus a little bit more. My notes from this morning are:
The bore is functioning well and being used by the teachers. They are sometimes using it automatically, sometimes manually depending on what staff is there however water is being maintained in the overhead tank at all times
- The new overhead 3000L tank, 3m tank stand and footings are installed
- The existing cement tank has been repaired, all fixtures repaired and a new float valve installed. All previous existing water connections have been connected upto this tank
- All associated pipework has been installed and buried. Valves have been installed to allow isolation of equipment when repairing.
- The teachers toilets have running water, new taps, have been cleaned and have a new handwashing facility installed
- The male student toilets have running water, new taps, have been cleaned, the urinals fixed and have a new handwashing facility installed
- The female student toilets have running water, new taps, have been cleaned and have 2 new handwashing facilities installed
- New doors have been installed on the toilets, securing the toilets (the school security is in charge of the keys)
- A new water connection has been made from the overhead tank to one of the classrooms – requested by the teachers
- Also, the wall has been repaired (by another project) so the school and water supply are now secure.
Overall the quality of workmanship is high and all the facilities are functioning as desired after 2 and a half weeks of use. I am happy to recommend that the project has been completed as per the specification.
Thank you very much to all of those who have assisted in this project being undertaken and completed. It has been a credit to you all, in particular I’d like to thank Simon Osenieks and Kim Axworthy for their dedication and hard work.
